Why do we have Blackheads?

Blackheads are one of the most common manifestations of acne, and they will most often occur in the chin and nose. Although people who have oily skin or acne-prone skin are more likely to have blackheads, anyone can have them.

Blackheads form when a clog or plug develops in the opening of hair follicles in your skin. Each follicle contains one hair and a sebaceous gland that produces oil. This oil, called sebum, helps keep your skin soft. Dead skin cells and oils collect in the opening to the skin follicle, producing a bump that we call a blackhead.

How can we treat them?

I know it is very tempting to squeeze them your self, but please leave this to the professionals as you can make matters worse and end up with infections and scarring.
It is best to see a Skin Therapist and have them professionally removed in a clean, safe environment.

How can we prevent them?

Having a healthy functioning skin is the best way to prevent these annoying blackheads from forming. The following steps are crucial.

  1. Cleansing- This is absolutely the number one step that is often neglected especially at night when we are feeling tired. Imagine leaving the days build-up of oil, dirt, makeup and pollution just sitting on the skin all night......Nooooooo. It is so important to not only cleanse once, but we need to cleanse twice at night. The first cleanse only removes makeup etc. The second cleanse actually gets into the pores and cleans them thoroughly.
  2. Exfoliate- This is number 2 on the list. Proper exfoliation removes the barrier of dead skin cells clogging the skin and uncovers fresh new cells below. Keeps the hair follicles free from dead skin debris and gives the skin the best possible chance to function correctly.
  3. Hydrate- This might seem strange, but it is vital. If you neglect Hydrating the skin with the appropriate Moisturiser, it will feel stripped and dry. In turn, the oil glands start producing more oil to combat the dryness. This then becomes a cycle of the overproduction of oil, which then leads to blocked pores.
  4. Mask- We can add some additional at-home treatments in to help keep the skin balanced and exfoliated using different types of masks. These are best to be prescribed by a professional to determine what is best for your skin type.
  5. In-clinic treatments- Having a skin treatment every month can do wonders and keep the skin on track, and your skin therapist can keep an eye on what is happening with your skin and advise accordingly.
