Why Do I Get Acne?

Suffering from acne, especially in more severe cases, can affect you physically and emotionally. If you're experiencing acne, the first question that may come to mind is "Why do I get acne?".

The reason why you get acne can be difficult to pinpoint sometimes, but working with an experienced Skin Professional is key to start slowly ticking off all the potential acne triggers you may be experiencing.

How does acne form?

Acne forms when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, leading to the growth of bacteria and inflammation. The oil produced by the skin, known as sebum, is intended to lubricate and protect the skin. However, when too much sebum is produced, it can mix with dead skin cells and form a plug that blocks the hair follicle. This plug creates an ideal environment for bacteria to grow, leading to redness, swelling, and the formation of pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads.

While acne is a common condition, it can have a significant impact on a person's self-esteem and quality of life.

Why do I get acne?

  1. Excess oil production
Hormones called androgens can cause the sebaceous glands in the skin to produce more oil than necessary. This excess oil can clog hair follicles and lead to acne.

  2. Bacteria
The bacterium called Propionibacterium acnes is found in the hair follicles and can cause inflammation, leading to the development of pimples.

  3. Dead skin cells
When the skin sheds dead skin cells, they can combine with the excess oil and clog the hair follicles, leading to acne.

  4. Hormonal changes
Hormonal changes during puberty, menstrual cycles, pregnancy, and other periods of hormonal fluctuation can trigger acne.

  5. Genetics
Some people may be more predisposed to acne due to their genetics.

  6. Medications
Certain medications can contribute to the development of acne.

  7. Inner health
One of the most potent triggers for acne comes from internal factors such gut health. The consumption of sugar, dairy, processed foods and not getting enough sleep play a huge role in our skin. Our gut health is the main communicator of our skin and brain. If our gut is not balanced then it has a knock on effect our skin, where we will see skin conditions like acne.
