How to treat Melasma!

Melasma is one of the most challenging skin conditions to treat and it can be really debilitating for who has it. Melasma can be very ageing and it is triggered not only by the sun but also by heat. Plus, trying to cover it up can be very difficult.

Let's take a look at what Melasma actually is and how we have found a solution that actually (and finally) works!

What is Melasma?

Melasma is a type of hyperpigmentation characterised by the appearance of generally symmetrical stains on the face, particularly on the cheeks, nose, forehead and upper lip.

It is caused by abnormal production of melanin. Melanin is the pigment responsible for our skin colour. A consequence of uncontrolled, localised overproduction of melanin causes irregular skin colouration and dark patches on the skin.

External and internal factors that contribute to Melasma

  1. Genetic Tendency
  2. Sun Exposure
  3. Inflammation
  4. Hormones
  5. Ageing
  6. Exposure to chemicals
  7. Photosensitising medication

Numerous treatment options have been tested in the last few decades, such as trying to eliminate the pigment with IPL, Laser therapy. These methods have been widely used, but they are expensive, invasive and have proven to be a hit and miss when it comes to efficacy. These methods even pose a high risk of making Melasma worse in multi-ethnic skin types as there is an increased risk of post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation.

Furthermore, there are many topical treatment alternatives: chemical peels, creams containing acids to increase cell turnover, and even medical topical formulations based on hydroquinone, to regulate melanin production.

All these treatments are only a partial solution to a very complex problem. Melasma requires a multifocal approach capable of eliminating, regulating and preventing further pigment from appearing.

The Cosmelan Method

The Cosmelan method offers this approach with maximum patient safety regardless of skin type and ethnic group. Thanks to it's corrective and regulatory effects that controls melanin production, it reduces the transfer of pigment to the skin while eliminating pigment on the surface.

What does the Cosmelan Method consist of?

Step 1: In-Clinic - Application of Cosmelan, 1 mask as a thick layer all over the face. The product is left on for the prescribed amount of time, that can vary from 8-12 hours. It is rinsed off at home, and then you will be instructed as how to move onto the next step.

Step 2: Application of the Cosmelan 2 Maintenance Cream in conjunction with the prescribed homecare essentials, included in the Cosmelan method.

Step 3: Continued use of Cosmelan 2 Cream 2-3 times per week to prevent the reappearance of the pigment. A high SPF has to be worn every single day!!

*Please also note that the Cosmelan 2 Cream can be used as a stand-alone treatment to help with Hyperpigmentation and anti-ageing!

*This Method is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
