How to Get Rid of Dark Circles and Puffy Eyes

I have spent half my life asking this very question. For as long as I can remember, the dark circles and puffiness of my eyes have plagued me. I would sleep well, yet I would wake up looking like someone had rubbed charcoal around my eyes.

Not Pretty. Over time I began to realise that a good night’s sleep alone won’t get rid of your dark circles. While it can help the appearance of your eyes and the skin around it, dark circles also depend on things like diet, lifestyle, dehydration and your age (although younger people aren’t immune from it either).

Unfortunately for those (including myself) who have chronic dark circles, looking tired and aged is an all too familiar sight. How many times has someone come up to you and asked, ‘wow are you ok, you look tired?’ And you think to yourself, 'well I’ve had a good night’s sleep?'.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom - there are of course many things you can do to naturally alleviate dark circles and puffy eyes - including getting enough sleep, regular exercise and maintaining a healthy diet.

Dietary changes that can help with dark circles

  • Consume foods that are rich in Vitamin K, Vitamin C, Vitamin A and Vitamin E
  • Drink at least 2 litres of water every day
  • Make sure you have enough iron and B12 in your diet, as the deficiency of either is known to cause dark circles under the eyes

Ingredients in skincare products you should look for

Besides dietary and lifestyle changes, the skin under your eyes is capable of responding very well to various skincare products. And because the skin under your eyes is super delicate (almost as thin as an egg shell) it is very important that you use specific products for the eye area.

To get the skin under your eyes looking their best, these are some of the ingredients you should be looking for in your skincare products:

  • Aloe Vera which cools, calms and soothes.
  • Licorice is an anti-ageing agent
  • Lots of berries to help with inflammation and fighting free radicals such as Goji and Acai (just like your favourite bowl they do just as well outside of the body as inside)

  • Kakadu Plum which natural contains Vitamin C, E + Folic Acid to brighten and rejuvenate

  • By narrowing blood vessels and calming skin, caffeine can temporarily reduce under-eye bags. Caffeine can also wake up tired eyes by reducing the appearance of dark circles.

  • Peptides which will stimulate collagen synthesis.
  • Retinol - Retinol will smooth the skin's surface and minimise the appearance of dark circles.

  • Hyaluronic Acid is another hero ingredient when it comes to the under eye and eye area. It will retain moisture and avoid the dry wrinkled look.
