Active Ingredients, are they for me?

There is so much emphasis on incorporating active ingredients into your skincare routine, but it can become quite confusing to know what active ingredients to use, how and when to use it.

What are active ingredients?

Actives are natural ingredients that have been scientifically proven to change the structure of your skin at a cellular level.

They're the ingredients that work to repair, rejuvenate, hydrate, protect, and nourish cells.

Active Ingredients in Skin care

Why do we need Active Ingredients?

People with mature skin need these potent active ingredients to maintain plump and youthful-looking skin. Teens need them to control blockages and breakouts caused by excess sebum that can lead to acne. Everyone exposed to the dehydrating effects of the sun needs active ingredients to avoid developing sun-induced skin conditions that could lead to skin cancers and pigmentation.

In short, we can all benefit from active skincare.

Most well known actives.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA'S)

The more commonly known are the Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid, Tartaric Acid and Citric Acid. These types of acids are derived from sugarcane, milk, or fruit.

As chemical exfoliators, AHAs work by peeling away the dead skin cells on the skin surface, revealing the fresh new skin cells underneath. Helpful for fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone.

Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA'S)

Salicylic Acid is the most used BHA and it is derived from willow-tree. Salicylic Acid also helps to remove dirt, bacteria, and grime that has built up on the surface of the skin so that pores can remain clear and free from irritants. By removing dead skin cells and bacteria from the skin, Salicylic Acid helps to purify and exfoliate, which improves skin health and appearance. Fantastic on oily acne-prone skin types.

Vitamin C

A potent antioxidant helping to promote collagen production, topical Vitamin C can help prevent premature ageing of the skin. Another amazing thing about this Active Ingredient: It contains a property that inhibits your skin's melanin production, which is what causes dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

Vitamin A (Retinol)

This is, without doubt, the most effective anti-ageing ingredient available. Vitamin A in skincare products works by normalising skin functions, which equals a correction of all skin conditions. Means everyone can benefit from having Vitamin A on the skin. From Ageing to Acne and also Pigmentation. My favourite ingredient and something I choose to have in my skincare at all times.

Hyaluronic Acid

This Active Ingredient helps reduce the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles by retaining moisture in the skin, creating a plumping effect. When the skin is protected and hydrated, increased skin cell production can take place, as the skin isn't busy fighting for hydration. This leads to smoother, plumper skin cells.

Peptides

Peptides are proteins and the fundamental building blocks of skin. Without peptides, skin doesn't remain intact, and the result is the loss of firmness, appearance of wrinkles, texture changes, and skin that doesn't bounce back as it once did. Combine Peptides with other actives, and you will get fantastic results!

Vitamin B3

This is one of the best forms of B vitamins for your skin. Also known as Niamicin, Vitamin B3 can help improve the condition of the skin with conditions such as rosacea, acne, eczema, dermatitis, hyperpigmentation, sun-damaged skin, ageing, and dry skin. It's definitely a must-have vitamin for healthy, glowing skin.

Be mindful that when starting on any new skincare regime, especially including the use of more active ingredients, you should introduce them slowly to the skin.
